Hilton London Heathrow Airport
goes "green"

02

Sustainability is something we all take very seriously –and that’s certainly true here at the Hilton London Heathrow Airport.

It’s in the lifeblood of Hilton and its Travel With Purpose campaign, its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism globally.

We’re delighted to play our part – and we know our guests appreciate the fact that we are helping them reduce their environmental impact when they stay with us – without compromising their hotel experience.

We have invested heavily in sustainability with initiatives including introducing 100% LED lighting, motion sensors which turn off lights if no movement is detected back of house, along with our Room Energy Management system which works in the same way in our guest bedrooms, as well setting the temperature to an ambient level.

No area of the hotel has been neglected when it comes to sustainable improvements. We have reduced the volume of flushes in all guestrooms and public area toilets are equipped with sensor-controlled urinals and guest bedrooms are fitted with reduced volume hand-held shower heads. while all taps in public areas are sensor controlled along with staff changing facilities.

Kitchen staff operate knee control basins and every tap in the hotel is fitted with an aerator flow unit which reduces the volume of water but not the experience.

But it doesn’t stop there. For 2023 we have set up ourselves new targets - lowering waste generated and water usage by 3% each and cutting energy consumption by 5%.

We are working towards removing all single use product such as soaps, shampoos and conditioners – replacing them with refillable alternatives.

We’ve even found a use for those partially used soaps that are inevitably left behind – they are donated to Clean the World, a global health organisation, while discarded half empty bottles of water are now repurposed and poured into a water butt, which is then used to water the kitchen garden.

It comes as a surprise to many people to find that an airport hotel is surrounded by greenery – and that we use it to our best advantage.

We have beehives which not only create honey for use in the hotel but which also are so vital to the environment.

Our garden grows herbs, fruit and vegetables which the chef then uses in dishes at our OXBO eateries – you can’t get much fresher than that!

It also fits into the ethos behind our OXBO Café, OXBO Kitchen and OXBO bar. Inspired by nature and ‘agricultural heritage’ with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and hearty, generous food, the dining spaces have been designed to take into account the unique position of the hotel and to recreate ‘the kind of view that guests are likely to see when they are coming into land.’

We pride ourselves on the fact that we also make it easy for guests to do their bit for the environment, without really having to try.

This is particularly true when it comes to our conference and events packages, where we build in sustainability. This includes the opportunity to plant trees in the garden and hotel’s orchard, to improve local biodiversity. At the same time we offer the opportunity to choose healthier, energy-boosting meals and build in fitness, wellness or philanthropic activities.

Designed to elevate the meeting experience, these packages also often reduce food waste, incorporate environmentally friendly solutions and meet planners' CSR goals.

At our hotel we are very proud of the fact that no stone has gone unturned in our journey to help protect the planet for future generations and that we are flying the flag for Hilton.

April 2023 - Hilton London Heathrow Airport marks
Earth Day

London, UK –  11 April 2023 – Hilton London Heathrow Airport is showcasing a whole raft of new environmental initiatives to coincide with Earth Day.

Marked annually on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection, Earth Day is observed by approximately one billion people across 193 countries.

And, in keeping with this year’s theme; Invest in Our Planet, Hilton London Heathrow Airport has revealed the results of its ongoing commitment to the environment.

The award-winning hotel, at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 4, has introduced measures to cut down waste and reduce water and energy usage in line with Hilton’s Travel with Purpose environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism globally.

The hotel now operates completely on low energy LED lighting. A Room Energy Management system has been installed in all guest rooms to conserve energy by automatically turning off lights when nobody is in the room and setting the temperature to an ambient level.

A state-of-the-art building management system maximises the use of the air that is heated and cooled around the hotel – recirculating it to ensure there is no wastage in unoccupied areas and using less energy to heat or cool large areas such as the atrium.

The hotel has also introduced measures that make it easy for guests to reduce their environmental impact – sometimes without them even realising it.

Discarded half empty bottles of water from guest rooms and meeting spaces are used to water the kitchen garden, whilst leftover coffee grounds are used in the garden as fertiliser.

All single use plastics have been removed from meetings and events and

guest soaps are also recycled with any unused soaps donated to Clean the World, a global organisation dedicated to reducing waste whilst providing access to sanitation and hygiene kits those affected by poverty, homelessness, and humanitarian or natural crises.

Part of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose strategy, Meet with Purpose is designed to elevate the meeting experience, with packages that reduce food waste, incorporate environmentally friendly solutions and help meet planners’ own ESG goals.

As part of its Meet with Purpose offering, Hilton London Heathrow Airport offers guests the opportunity to get involved in driving sustainability initiatives on property. This includes the opportunity to plant trees in the garden and hotel’s orchard, to improve local biodiversity.

As part of its efforts to improve local biodiversity, the hotel also now has four beehives which are home to 30,000 bees - whose honey is gifted to guests and clients on special occasions - and a Chef’s Garden, where herbs, vegetables and fruit are grown and used across its three OXBO dining experiences – OXBO bar, OXBO Café and OXBO Kitchen.

Fruit and vegetables trimmings are composted and returned to the garden, while

chefs also work closely with suppliers to ensure that produce is sourced locally whenever possible and is sustainable.

Hilton is focused on paving the way towards a net-zero future and remains committed to partnering with its customers to help minimize carbon footprints and redefine sustainable travel - and all its key indicators show real progress towards that goal.

Oliver Stockland, area general manager, Hilton, is very proud of the measures the hotel has taken and the positive response to them.

“We are passionate about doing everything we can to reduce our environmental footprint, and are celebrating Earth Day by reinforcing this commitment,” he said. “We’re so proud of the progress we have made, but we’re not done yet. We continue to look for new ways to minimise our impact and look forward to continuing to showcase these important initiatives to our guests.”

The award-winning property was named the World’s Leading Airport Hotel for five consecutive years and Europe’s Leading Airport Hotel for the past eight years.
